Halloween Picture Book Thrills with Interactive Ghosts!!
If you are looking for one special book for Halloween either as a birthday present or just to celebrate the holiday with your OMGchild, then I have found the book for you.
Calling Horrible Hauntings: An Augmented Reality Collection of Ghosts and Ghouls just a book, though, is selling it short. It’s a book with a built-in interactive gaming app and I’d use it in two parts.
Part 1: You will meet famous ghosts including The Flying Dutchman, Abraham Lincoln, The Princes in the Tower, Whalley Abbey, The Brown Lady, The Headless Horseman, The Haunted Gallery, The Amherst Poltergeist, The Black Dogs and Bloody Mary. There is a segue into history too if your OMGchild wants to go down that path but you will probably want to get to … Part 2 as fast as you can!
Part 2: You can use the QR code to download the app or just download it at iTunes. It’s a free app but it only works with this picture book. You will need to find each right-hand blank page with the view finder of the app. When you have accomplished that, the app will let you know. Then the fun begins as the ghosts appear, one to each page.
Certain ghosts offer interactivity but that can be a little tricky from a manual dexterity point of view as you must hold your iPhone over the book (and moving the screen off the page means you have to start over). Then, for the interactive portion, you will need a second set of hands.
The actual images and games are not that scary, except maybe for one face that is frankly very creepy looking, but it’s all pretty basic animation. Most kids will delight in the novelty of books that have built in gaming apps and find the ghosts fun but not overly scary, especially if they can handle Harry Potter movies!
Buy This For Your OMGsons, age 6 and up: The suggested age for this book is 9 and up but my 7-year-0ld son delighted in it. He would have been fine as a 6-year-old as well.
Happy Halloween, everyone!!!
